Hello All. Just under 18,000 terrific miles in our 2012 Terrain SLT2 - until today that is. Brought car in for an oil change and tire rotation - nothing else and no problems. Wife got car back, and when started it up car filled with smoke and white smoke poured out of exhausts. Car rough at idle. After a couple of minutes, wife drives home, as service man says they must have spilled a little oil while refilling. Hmmm. I called later but they'd already closed. Wife starts cars later, same thing.

Just started car myself - same thing. Huge amounts of smoke pouring from tailpipes, passenger compartment completely filled, car stalled. Restarted, opened windows, and drove a bit, like 1 mile. Car remained running but rough at idle. I'm thinking they way overfilled with oil? Any ideas? I had planned to drive this car about 400 miles this weekend, but no way now. I'm afraid of being stuck or doing damage. Very disappointing and disconcerting. We have really enjoyed this car, but I'm afraid they've done something damaging. I will start it again in the daylight and film it.

The smoke does sound like more oil than needed. Did you check the dipstick? I'm not a mechanic. Growing up, my dad always told me that overfilling an engine was just as bad or worse than not filling it up enough. I know my mom destroyed the heads on her car driving a 1/2 mile when she hit a rock that punctured the oil pan. I definitely wouldn't recommend driving it.

Thanks. Problem not resolved. My wife brought the car back Monday. They checked it out and said "a wire was knocked loose." Not sure how that happened during an oil change. Anyway, I suggested we leave it at the dealer overnight. Went to pick it up today, and smoke pouring out of tailpipes, despite being told it was road-tested. They said they'd fix it right up, but unfortunately she wasn't able to wait, so they said they'd call when it was done. No call yet. I did make a video of the car on Saturday morning. I've attached a couple of still photos.

Thank you. Dealer called today and said car fixed. Loose wire allowed oil to get in to air intake tube. Repaired wire, and removed and cleaned intake. Picking up car tomorrow morning. Keeping fingers crossed. Will update this thread. I must admit though that I am concerned about where else oil - liquid or burned - has gotten to. Plugs? other components?

Good question. You might want to ask them if they check to see if oil went anywhere else. There's a good chance it could have happened.

Looking forward to an update from you on how your Terrain is running.

I would have to agree that your best bet would be to discuss your further concerns with the dealer. Continue to keep us posted.

Picked up car Thursday am. A small amount of smoke, but the car had been sitting outside overnight so here in the northeast, that's to be expected. Have been able to drive it only about 50 miles since, but so far seems okay, smooth at idle, etc. I do worry about other components, e.g., the catalytic converters, etc.

For what it's worth, no apology from the service manager, just gave me the paperwork. I was too aggravated to complain any further, and I had to use a car service to get to the dealer. They didn't offer the service for free or anything like a future discount. It wasn't much to start with, as it was supposed to just be an oil change, but still. I will be using a different dealer in the future.

dylan,
I would like to apologize again for your experience, but I am glad to hear that it has been resolved. Let me know if I can help you locate another dealer in your area for the future. Thank you again.
